Evaluation and Review of the Tasmanian Regional Councils Climate Adaptation Project

Future Ready (Climate Change in the Boardroom)

Climate Planning has recently been comissioned by Future Ready Pty Ltd to support the development of the a climate change for the boardroom guide. The project also includes stakeholder engagement. 


UNICEF

Climate Planning is undertaking a project for UNICEF exploring the issue of climate change and children.  The project explores a range of issues, including potential negative impacts of climate change policies.  The scope of the project covers the Pacific, with case studies and fielld visits to Vanuatu and Kiribati. An initial report which refers to the project is found below.

 

UNICEF Children’s Vulnerability to Climate Change and Disaster Impacts in East Asia and the Pacific

  "This report provides an overview of the climate change trends and  potential impacts on children in East Asia and the Pacific that appeared in studies covering five countries that were commissioned by the United Nations Children’s Fund. The country studies highlight children’s specific vulnerability to climate change that needs to be taken into
account in policy development."

Climate Planning undertook the Pacific research component,  focussing on  Kiribati and Vanuatu.  The technical report and advocacy paper will be published shortly.

Manidis Roberts

Climate Planning peer reviewed a climate change adaptation strategy project being undertaken by Manidis Roberts.  The project explores climate change adaptation issues for a top ASX company. 

 


Republic of the Marshall Islands

Climate Planning is working with CLIMSystems on the production of a vulnerability and adaptation assessment for the country of the Republic of the Marshall Islands Second National Communication.  In this project CLIMSystems have created a customised RMICLIM software system (based on their simCLIM platform) through the development of AR4 GCM patterns, an ensemble tool for sea level rise and sea surface temperature. 

 


 

Somerset Regional Council (Queensland)

Climate Planning is undertaking a climate change planning study which will support the development of a new planning scheme.  Climate Planning has been commissioned by planning specialists Humphries Reynolds Perkins (HRP) to help embed climate change into the planning scheme through the use of expert advice, climate change projections, acceptable solutions and planning scheme policies.


National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility (NCCARF)

Donovan Burton is consulting to NCCARF to provide specialist support for the local government end users.  The contract includes a range of roles including local government liaison and the development of the NCCARF Local Government Web Portal (see www.localgov.nccarf.edu.au).


Climate Change Training

Climate Planning is part of a consotorium which develops and delivers specialised climate change training for local governments and industry.  The project is called ClimatePro and includes Climate Planning, CLIMSystems, Manidis Roberts and the Climate Change Response Institute.


Climate Risk Pty Ltd

Climate Planning sub-consulted exclusively to Climate Risk Pty Ltd from 2007 to April 2010.  During this time Climate Planning was commissioned to create, manage and grow Climate Risk's planning portfolio.  During this time Climate Planning played a crucial role in the following projects:


Telstra

Towards a High Bandwidth Low Carbon Future: Telecommunications-based opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

This report provided an important nexus between mitigation and the opportunities for industry to adapt to climate change policy.  Donovan Burton from Climate Planning was one of the lead authors of the report and provided critical analytical input into the project.  The report received global media attention and was presented at ITU/MIC Symposium on ICTs and Climate Change in Kyoto 2008.


 Moreton Bay Regional Council (Queensland) - Scoping Climate Change Assessment

The overall goal of the project was to undertake a scoping climate change risk assessment for the council and community it represents. Climate Planning's role was to undertake project management, workshop creation and facilitation as well as undertake primary research and write the final report.  A copy can be downloaded here.    


 Nambucca, Bellingen and Kempsey Shires (NSW) - Regional Climate Change Risk Assessment

The aim of this project was to undertake an integrated climate change risk assessment and adaptation plan for Bellingen, Nambucca and Kempsey Shires. Climate Planning was involved in the risk assessment phase only. Duties included primary research, project management, workshop facilitation, input into economic modeling and report writing. The output of the project included three council-specific climate change risk assessments and a regional overview.  


Zurich Financial Services

From Risk to Advantage: General Insurers as Key Agents for Climate Change Adaptation

Climate Planning and Climate Risk developed the Climate Risk Diamond framework to examine the climate change risks facing the global insurance industry and avenues open to it to secure advantage.   The project involved a deep literature review and analytical examination of the potential role insurers can play in mainstreaming climate change adaptation. Donovan Burton was a lead author in this project which was distributed internationally.
 

Cradle Coast Catchment Authority (Tasmania) Regional Climate Change Risk Assessment

Climate Planning helped Climate Risk Pty run workshops and peer review the scoping climate change risk assessment for nine councils in the Cradle Coast Catchment.


 Queensland Department of Infrastructure and Planning - Risk Assessment Methodological Review

The aim of this project was to review and critically analyze examples of climate change risk assessment methodologies and identify which methodology would be best suited to drive climate change resilience in the South East Queensland (SEQ) Region. The project was a component in the regional planning process and the development of the South East Queensland Regional Plan (SEQRP) Climate Change Management Plan.

Queensland Department of Infrastructure and Planning - Climate Change Information Gap Analysis

This project was designed to explore information required for a climate change risk assessment of the SEQ Region. The project included desktop review and key stakeholder liaison. Donovan Burton was the project manager and sole lead author on the project.


Queensland Department of Infrastructure and Planning - Climate Change Mapping for South East Queensland

The aim of this project was to provide the Department of Infrastructure and Planning spatial projections of key climate change variables for pre-selected GCMs for 2030, 2050 and 2070. 


 Sunshine Coast Regional Council (Queensland) - Planning for Adaptation

The aim of this project was to explore how planning can be utilized for climate change resilience.   In particular this paper explored the following:

·         A broad overview of the institutional framework of climate change strategies (including a summary of the climate change adaptation regulatory framework in Queensland);
·         Potential planning strategies to deal with specific climate change risks;
·         Case studies of national and international local government planning actions;
·         Important principles to consider when implementing adaptation options; and
·         Suggested direction and possible priorities for future adaptation actions for SCRC

Darebin City Council (Victoria) - Peak Oil and Climate Change Adaptation Plan

The aim of this project was to create an adaptation plan that considered the confluence of climate change and peak oil (oil vulnerability) Climate Planning's role was to undertake workshop creation and facilitation as well as undertake primary research and co-write the final report.  A copy of the report can be downloaded here.
